Succulents & Cacti

Succulents and Cacti are sun loving, drought tolerant plants. They love lots of sunshine and warmth, but need very little water to survive.

Although they love lots of sunshine, most cacti and succulents will also tolerate low light spots as long as watering is decreased even more in these situations.

While they are extremely low maintenance, cacti and succulents are easy to kill when overwatered. The most common mistake made with these plants is too much water. When cacti and succulents are given too much water, the root system very quickly gets overloaded with moisture and turns soft and mushy.

A small cactus in a 4” pot or smaller, should receive only a few tablespoons of water at a time. How often they are watered depends on how much sunshine they get. If they are in a hot, sunny window they may need to be watered every two weeks. If they are in a spot that doesn’t get a lot of light, they may only need to be watered once every 3-4 weeks.

A succulent in a 4” pot or smaller will need similar care, although they may need to be watered 3-4 tablespoons at a time every week or every other week if they are in a hot sunny window.
